UNABASHED:

Without disguise or apology, Weil shares his (inner) world

For more than 30 years, viewers have looked to artist Tracy Weil for bright and playful paintings.

With open arms, he introduced us to whimsy. Fanciful characters fly across a canvas lifted by angels and teetering tops in a universe populated with birds, bats, elves, owls, chickens, and more.

Bowls of noodle-stripes share space with crooked sunflowers that stand like flags declaring joy. Weil’s world is a party, a stage, a whirlwind romp across mountains and fields, farms and waves. We don’t know where we’re going, but isn’t it lively and so much fun?

It’s been decades since Weil debuted his paintings. There, in a 1990s basement space carved out of City Spirit Cafe (a place that served as the center of art culture in what was then fledgling downtown Denver), Weil opened the door and let us in. Like anaffable host, he shared what is now his signature bright sunflowers and wacky noodles. Then, as now, Weil was full of color and delight.

Sometimes the artist is the painting. And sometimes he is more. With UNABASHED, we see that Weil is, indeed, the lovable painter and person we’ve always known him to be, but that he is also attentive, engaged, open-eyed. He is fun-loving and bright, with a deep and rich inner life.

With this new exhibition, we see — perhaps for the first time, or maybe just more clearly — the undaunted artist exploring more deeply his well-loved terrain. And with open arms and a hearty hello, he welcomes us to his wonderful world once again.

CHARACTER GUIDE: Click here for the downloadable print version
To help viewers navigate his work, Weil has created a special-exhibition Character Guide featuring nearly 50 of his archetypal symbols. While the iconography is fluid, a stable of favorites appear throughout his collection of powerful paintings. With this Guide, viewers have the opportunity to peek inside the mind of the artist’s whims and intentions. Weil often paints in a stream of consciousness state that allows his works to emerge free of constraints. “Feelings change,” he says, “and painting provides the possibilities.”

Paintings, collages, street art, working objects and live plants will be a part of this major exhibition for Weil.
